Goyomatsu (five-leaf pine) An evergreen tree that grows green even in winter, Goyomatsu bonsai is a symbol of longevity and is popular as a bonsai for good luck.
This name “Goyomatsu” was the trade name that preceded the family name for generations of our ancestors. In Tamba Sasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture, the hometown of Tamba Toji, we were a Tamba pottery craftsman, antique dealer, straw barrel manufacturer, and seller, and we were in the business of helping people in need. We have been loved and supported by the people around us for generations, and we hope to carry on the skills we have cultivated.
Bringing more “komodaru” (straw barrels) to Japan and the world
Just as sake breweries are still making their best efforts to produce sake using the old-fashioned methods of “ikuhashi-zukuri” and “kiokke-brewing,” the wooden barrels in which sake is stored and the okeya, or “barrel makers,” are still around. Originally, straw barrels existed as a necessity to protect wooden barrels from rough seas when transporting sake from Itami and Nada-Gogo to Edo (now Tokyo). The straw used to make these barrels was rice straw. Craftsmen who made straw from rice straw are still alive and well. Today, the local industry of Amagasaki City, Hyogo Prefecture, is a straw straw wrapping industry, in which young craftsmen roll straw straw straw into wooden barrels. In the history of Japanese sake, a product that has inherited the spirit, materials, and techniques that must never be lost is the straw-wrapped barrel. Goyamatsu is committed to the mission of promoting these barrels to the world as an advertising strategy for the important Japanese culture.
